I just want to let you know what a true inspiration you are to all. You were at our school today 12/9/09 (Beaver Dam Elementary) in KY. The message you gave to our students is truly inspirational. As I told you when you were here I to was an object of bullying in grade school thru high school. The message you are spreading is great. It was great to meet you, your parents and also Lindsey and Jack. Great dogs. If ever there is anything I can do for you please don't hesitate to ask. If you can't remember who I am I am the one who helped hold the dogs and I also lived in Michigan when I was a youngster. (I was the one at the tigers game in 68) Take care and I will say a prayer for all of you and also for the message you are putting out. I know they say everything happens for a reason and maybe this is the only way God new how to get this very important message across. He has chosen an exceptional young lady to pass this on. God Bless and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I myself was bullied in school for not having the money and things the other kids have. I believe it has made me a stronger person today. Again, I look forward to meeting you and listening to the message you give to our students.

We heard about you & your book thro' them. Don works with your dad.

Teaching special ed at high school level, I, unfortunately, have to help some of my students deal with bullying.

Discovery Education, United Streaming just had a segment on "Stand up for Kids" with a slideshow of 9 myths about bullying. I forwarded it to ALL staff in the entire district stating that it was a crucial issue & all schools should present this short slideshow.

I'm also ordering a copy of the book to share with students & collegues.

I just wanted to let you know I watched your story when I was pregnant with my daughter. I was moved by your story. I found it wonderful how a dog gave you such inspiration to live again. I named my daughter Isabelle, after Izzy. She was my reson to live. Her father fed my low self-esteem. I won't let that happen to her. We have a no bullying policy at my childrens school. It is a no tolerance policy. I wish they would have had that in place when I went to school. My children have a chance to have a good self-esteem. They showed me I can too. I just wanted to thank you. You and Izzy showed me there is hope.

Gabe is doing a great job bringing attention to bullying in school. Why is it I never hear anything about bullying in the work place? It is well known that people with disabilities in the work place are the low people on the totem pole, and often times end up getting fired.

Today I was in Verizon Wireless and I noticed this lady walk in the door as I was being helped, her purse had a picture of a dog on it and it imediatley caught my eye. It was Izzy.

I walked over to her and polietly asked "how do you know Gabe and Izzy?" She replied "Gabe is my daughter" I was shocked as we then started talking. She went on to say that you had to put Izzy down, and then I started to cry, so I told her my story...

I too have been bullied, and I know what its like to go through that sorta thing. I had went to Linden schools sense elementary and my freshman year of high school I switched to Lake Fenton School District, because of bullying.

There was this group of girls that would torment me and call me names in the hallways. They would put horrible horrible notes in my locker, so that I would get them in between classes.. & thats not all, one of the girls acually went as far as to have her mom call my house and threaten to beat me up.

My parents were well aware of the bullying I was going through, but when the other girls mother called our house..that was the last straw!
My parents went to the school the next day, and showed the staff all the letters the girls were putting in my locker & told the principal what was going on & about the phone call we recieved the night before..
The principal told my mother that there was nothing he could do about the name calling. My mother was livid, so we took the next step. We went to the police. At the police station she gave them all the evidence they needed & we then got a personal protection order against the girls & their families, any contact with them what-so-ever was to be reported to the police imediately.

After my parents went to the police, my mother decided to give the school a piece of her mind. So she sat in on one of the public board meetings and gave a speech about bullying in schools and what I, as well as my family, had went through.

Today I am graduated from lake Fenton and I am attending Saginaw Valley State University in the fall. I'm writing to you because your story really was inspiring to me and it hits really close to home, i've been through it all..and i'm so happy you and Izzy are getting the story out there and teaching people that bullying is so so so serious. You truley are a hero in my eyes, and i wish you and your family the best.

god bless :)

(& I'm so sorry about Izzy, I know how much she ment to you)

Gabe I recently stumbbled onto your website realizing who you where after years of lost contact.

You always had a strong personality about you and the heart warming deep dimples i loved so much! Still to this day, you carry those traits. The love you had shows with the love you give. Izzy is proof of your love. Please know that she is now running, romping and playing with your great grandfather whom also loved his dogs!!!! With out a doubt he is looking down upon you with the same proudness his had holding as a baby. Some of the few times he truly smiled. You impacted lives then and will continue to do so in the future.

Your mother always knew you were special as a baby but didnt know in what way at the time. Grow and continue with your search in life knowing the stregth you have within yourself, family (those here and those looking down), and your extended family and friends will help direct in your path.

As always, you were and always will be "my favorite". I love you Gabe!!

I am glad you had Izzy and she had you. I met and hung out with you many years ago at MDA camp and now I work in a school with physcially, mentally & emotionally disabled students. I see what these children go through on a daily basis and I shared your story of strengh and courage with them. It was a pleasure meeting you all today at our Jr. High School. As I mentioned to Mom, "thank god you let Gabe have a dog." My 4 dogs have also inspired my life when I needed someone. When one died tragically I was devastated. A year later I got another Pug, just like the one who died. Not quite the same but it does help.
Your message today was well received by our students and I know they were listening. I personally can't thank you enough for sharing since I also was very bullied in school. Not for the same reasons as you but still it was very hard nonetheless. Keep up the good work and good luck with ILO. Regards, Joyce

Gabrielle, I want to tell you how much of an inspiration you have been to me! I have no physical ailments, but since March of this year I have experienced some VERY tough mental ailments. I am doing MUCH better now, however, since I read your story in Guideposts back in April, I have thought about you and Izzy EVERY day! I wake up each morning with a smile on my face, knowing that there are positive things in life to look forward to... And yes, I am a DOG LOVER myself, so I too know that having a DOG as your best friend is AMAZING! Keep your head up and your spirits high thinking about IZZY, and remember that God has everything already worked out in HIS plan! You seem VERY intelligent and are helpful to people all over the country... Just wanna know when you might travel south for a speech or two? I live in Mississippi and would love the chance to attend your speeches! I'm already out of high-school (and should be done with college by now) but recently, God has called me into his plans for Seminary school. You are not alone in today's struggle so please remember, "No pain-no gain!" I'm still unsure about many things in my life today, but one thing I am sure of is this... Gabe, I just read your story in the Feb.Guidepost issue. It inspired me and gave me hope. I have sat in my house for the last 8 months feeling depressed and sorry for myself due to job loss, and illness. Having been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis I am finding it increasing difficult to find work that I can do. Ready your story has given me such inspiration!!! God sent you to me, just as he sent Izzy to you. God Bless You Gabe

Hi Gabe....I read your story on-line on GuidePost and was very touched by how you went forward in your life with the help of your dog-friend, Izzy. She looks very loveable. I have a cat....and he is a real source of companionship for me in particular...he loves to cuddle with his human mama (me).

I just read an article about Izzy's passing and wanted to express sympathy. When Gabe and Izzy apppeared at my daughter's school several years ago, my daughter spoke personally to Gabe about the fact that she was being bullied. Gabe told her how sorry she was and gave her words of encouragement. This finally inspired my daughter to make the changes we felt were necessary and switch schools. She is now in a much better environment, and although in therapy to repair the damage to her self esteem, is doing much better. We will keep Izzy in our prayers and will be forever thankful for the love and encouragement they both gave.

It's 5:55 AM and we could not sleep Gabe. All we could think about was Izzy and how much we already miss her.

Gabe you SAVED IZZY'S LIFE and in turn she loved you so much she paid SOCIETY BACK by giving her beauty, strength and courage teaching students, teachers, educators and so many others around the world that
BULLYING IS A CHOICE and it's long term effect. Through you so many students have save having to go through the bullying you endured in school and so many have former bullies recognized their behaviors. The comments in your guest book are powerful and heart felt. These comments are BELONG TO YOU AND IZZY FOREVER and is a true message of her work on this earth.

Izzy gave you strength, courage and brought out your beauty. You are who you are today all because of your dog named IZZY. As we have told you many times only dog lovers understand a dogs love. We understand a dogs love because Dog spelled backwards is GOD and GOD IS LOVE.

We will miss being on the road with Izzy, but Izzy is going to live on forever in the heart of students and many in the world. Your wish has been granted... IZZY WILL LIVE FOREVER IN THE LIVES OF SO MANY TODAY, TOMORROW AND FOREVER.

Personally, i'm insipred by the fact that you would give some of your time to us, to make the world a better place. If everyone would feel how they felt in that gymnasium, all the time, and always thought about the effect their actions could have on someone else, the world would be a much better place. I love your act against violence in schools, and your fight against bullying. I'm movivated by seeing you to help speak up for people more often. So, thank you.

Hi Gabe, this is Brittney Goode from Mrs. Taylors class. I didnt get a chance to meet you because my grandma was in the hospital. I wanted to ask you some important questions about my sister. My sister is seventeen, and she has been getting seziers for no reason. And students in her school were making fun of her. They finally got it to the point were she dont want to go to school. What suggestions do you have so I can help my sister and get her to enjoy the things she use to?? Also what could I do to help her and make her feel compterble around a group of people? She use to love to hangout with people but now she feels like everywere she goes people are making fun of her. I was really disapointed when I herd what happened to you when you were in school. It made me realize what jerks their are out there. I know that if that was to happen to me I wouldnt know what to do. But it was nice talking about you I think it made some of the kids realize that there is hope for everyone out there. And thought people not to give up.

Hi Gabe and Izzy! You came to Clio Middle School, talked to the some of the middle schoolers, and my english teacher, your step sister Mrs. Taylor took us over to see you. You told us your story about your condition and how kids bullied you in high school. I think bullying is bad, how they bullied you is wrong because you were hurt, and could not control what you have. You are one of the strongest women I know, through everything you have gone trough, being told you were going to die when you were younger, look your in your early 30's, and still living! Everything you told us was inspirational and made me think twice before I say something to someone. Im glad you came to the middle school and talked to us. I hope Izzy gets better and I hope to see you agian.
Thank You so much,

Hello my name is Stephy, and you came to my school a couple weeks ago, and when I listeded to your speach, it really showed me that bullying can really can hurt people more than it seems like it really does. It made me have a new perspecitve on bullying, and treating people the way they deserve to be treated. so I'd like to thank you for that.

Gabe and Izzy, I seen you at Clio Middle School, even though I go to the High School. Throughout your whole speech I found myself very touched and I found myself holding back tears. I was really touched by what you said and what the people said from Fenton High School, it really did make me want to help out with everything that is going on with bullying but I don't know how. I wish that your speech would affect everyone like it did me, and everyone would understand how bullying actually effects people and their feelings. I can't say that I know excactly what you're going through, cause i defiantly don't, but I love how you went through everything that you did, and you're still trying to help everyone else. High school isn't the easiest thing to go through but day by day you making it easier for the kids who get bullied. You are honestly one of the strongest women I know. Thank you, so much.

Hello Gabe and Izzy! I was so happy that you guys got to come to my school. By the way i go to Swartz Creek Middle School. Anyways i just wanted to tell you when ever i got bullied at school i never was alone, all of my friends helped me and we never gave up. Sometimes I make fun of people but i always go back and apoligise. One time there was this new kid in are class and he made a very bad impression by hurting (or bullying) My friend. So nobody talked to him for a whole semester. We all thought he was a bad kid. But he really wasnt and we mad him really sad by not talking to him and bullying him the same way he bullied us. But now i am in 6th grade and he is one of my bestfriends we always hang out and everything. He still is a little mean but i think hes learned his lesson when you came to are school. Now i hope we can stay the best of friends and that he will never bully someone again. Before the assembly when you came my friend Hannah was mad at my friend (the friend that i was talking about) Brian. And after the assembly they made up and now are inspreable. I think that You and Izzy both made Hannah and Brian relise that they sould not hurt each other, intead they should get along. Thank you sooo much for coming to my school! Goodbye.

I love what you are doing going to schools and talking to kids about your past. I feel soo sad that you had to go throw that bullying durring your school days. I hope you have a happy life with your mom, dad, and izzy. I want you to know that there you will ALWAYS be in my heart. I wish the best of luck fighting the sickness. And i hope you have a very happy life. Tell your mom and izzy for me that i wish them the most happyest life too. Keep up the good work, you really touched my heart. Hey Gabe,
I wanted to say thank you for your strength and for being so strong you are an inspiration. I was at your bullying assembly in Clio today. I came with Fenton High School and our cast from Ticking. It is hard just to put on the play, but you lived through it and came out as beautiful as a rose. It makes me sad when I hear your story because I wish I was at your school with you because I would of done something I dont think I could let anyother student and sister in God's family be treated such a way. Anyways agains thank you and your such a beautiful person, YOU and your family and of course IZZY will be in my prayers I cant wait to see you guys again hopefully it is before our performance in a few weeks God bless.

I didn't come strait home after school, I went to track, but maybe you didn't go strait home either, so I got online as soon as I got home. When I saw the Animal Planet program, I thought it was kind of ironic that you would get a dog with an incurable deseas like you have. I'm sorry to learn that Izzy may not live very much longer, but she has done well with her life by bringing joy back into your life. I think I love my dogs very much, but you share a bond even stronger with Izzy that I can't even imagine. I was really touched by your talk about bullying today. Bye!

I feel that you changed the way I felt about getting picked on. I meen, you delt with it for so long and you didn't let them know how it affected you. I always let it show when I got picked on they would just pick on me even more. So I just think that you are an amazing person and I hope that Izzy gets better soon.

Hi, I have had several chronic illnesses since childhood and understand how hard it is to be different, and how painful it is to have others (especially friends) not understand or care enough to keep the relationship. It's hard not being in the middle of activities, but great that you have found a talent you didn't know you had! I have a cat only right now, but used to have dogs as well. The article in Guidepost will lead to more requests, I'm sure. I will be thinking of you both - who knows, a cure for these disorders may be around the corner - hope so!

I try to instill courage and hope as I work with this population of young ladies. I think you may have placed courage and hope in many of their minds in just one hour and this will hopefully carry them through hardships during their stay at Excelsior and throughout the rest of their lives as well. Gabe & Izzy..
My name is Anthony Cooper; I am 22 years old (As of February 10). Three days before my 18th birthday I was diagnosed with F.A. When I was told of this disease, I was pretty sure my life was over. I saw one of the top specialists in the nation and he saw two patients (including myself) with F.A. I didn't think I would find anyone else battling this, but it is good to know I am not alone. I appreciate the things you do to keep bullying down to a minimum. I went through bullying also, but by God's grace it was not too severe. Despite my walking like a drunk and being 22 walking with a cane, I must say I turned out pretty well.
My life is in no way over. I graduated the President of my senior class, I have an awesome job, and even though I was told I couldn't do it I live 450 miles away from my family and I am doing great! Also, when I thought no one would want to be with me, I found her! I am marrying the girl of my dreams in May of 2010. So if anyone tells you can't, they are in denial. YOU CAN!

Hi It's Izzy's Grandma!! What a great time in AZ I was so proud of YOU and IZZY. It always touches my heart when I see you speak with Izzy besdie you as you touch many hearts of other as they listen to your heart speak. Give Izzy a kiss and hug from her Grandma

I saw you at the IRA conference. I teach kindergarten. Even into adulthood I have been bullied by colleagues. In elementary school when I was allowed to participate in P.E., I was always last. My scars are covered by clothing so no one knows about my past and disease. I understand that some diseases will never go away. I wish to instill in my students that even though others are different from them we each have something to contribute. I am working on master's degree in cross-categorical special education so I can teach in a children's hospital. You are an inspiration and don't ever give up hope.:)

Dear Gabe and Izzy

Thank you for coming to our school. Your visit taught me many things like what bullying would do. During your speeches you even made me have tears. I still wonder how painful mentally and physically when your mother told you what happened and you couldn't dance anymore. Did you know anyone named patricia? Because she was a teacher that told me that she helped people being bullied. My question is do your feet get numb?

Wow...out of the mouths of babes. What you said today reaches into everyones heart and touches us allby making us better human beings. Your voice is powerful. I have taught kids like you for over 27 years...those with patience and gifts of tolerance and yet relentlessly picked on by those who have little care, understanding, or compassion for others (no doubt many covering their own pain as well). My lessons to the students carry no power in contrast to yours. Thank you Gabe for all that you are doing for the kids who have been victims. You touch hearts...those wings are perfect...and waiting! Just tonight a story aired on the national news about a boy who lost his leg to cancer and became withdrawn and isolated himself from others until he met a horse with a prosthesis suffering the same fate who inspired this little nine year old to go out and conquer the world. God's best gift besides people like you watching out for others is our animals. Best wishes to you, Izzy...you are a blessed creature as well. Thanks to both you for changing our lives.

Hi Gabe & Dizzy,
I read with awe your story in Guidepost. How ironic, we have a grandson Gabriel (Gabe) with a diagnosis of fatty acid oxidation disorder and a mitocondrial disease. It will effect him so he can be bullied by his peers. He loses muscle energy and is not be able to walk. He is only 3 now but has started school for the disabled. Our daughter is already worried about bullying. She works with people with physical and mental disabilities in the state of Ohio and has been confronted by people who don't understand. When she is finished, they do understand.

Thank you for taking a stand and educating the youth. You have a great ministry. I will mention your work to the local schools and maybe we can cover the 3 schools in a day. Is that possible?

I pray for your mother's recovery from breast canceer.

Thank You and May God Bless.

Read your story in Guidepost. I know how it is growing up being different from the other kids. I have scleroderma morphia and was made fun of all during my school years. I don't think I would have made it if it weren't for my cats I have had thru out my last fifty years (Sugar, Spice, Pepper, Fuzzy, Waldo, Caspurr, Carrie, and Hermione). And then on top of that my father was the Principle of my Jr. and Sr. high schools.

I have been at my job in Mental Heath for almost 30 years and I'm sure the bad times I had during school has helped me do well in my job. It is wonderful that your dog has helped you turn your bad experiences into something good and helpful to the kids who go to your talks. Love your Izzy well and when it's time for her to go to doggy heaven, remember God will send you another 'Angel' for you to love.

Hello Gabe, I read your story in Guideposts Feb, 2009 issue. I have a good friend from high school, Mark, who also has ataxia. I call him from time to time to check on him. I know he gets out some to play pool and is part of a support group in Lebanon. I also know he appreciates people keeping in contact with him. He has shared with me that he has to deal with lonliness, as he is confined mostly to a wheel chair now. He should have just turned 50, but we still talk and laugh about our high school days, just bigger kids now. I would like to give him information to your site here, in hopes that you might have some time to talk with him. I am sure it would be special for him to connect with someone who has a similar situation. He is one of my best friends. Thank you for your time and consideration. May God bless you and your family in a special way. Respectfully, Steve.

I hope you had a good trip back to Michigan and I wanted you to know that you changed my life. I think that it is really brave what you do for other people by sharing your experiences with bullying. I am sorry you had to go through that. I hope to be a veterinarian one day....maybe I can one day come up with a cure for Izzy's condition. Well, thanks again.... you're an inspiration!
Love lots,
Chloe from Shive Elementary!
