I am a high school Spanish teacher and I have a student with FA. I haven't treated him any differently than any of the other students, really haven't even acknowledged his disorder. I often forget that he has it. He readily participates, goes up to the board (not without obvious difficulty/awkwardness) and all in all he is one of my favorite students. The problem is that we will be doing some salsa dancing. I would like him to participate if he wants to, but I don't know if he would feel comfortable, or if he would even be able to do it at all. I don't want him to feel left out, and I know that others students will be willing to be his partner, I just don't know what the disease is like or if it would be too physically and/or emotionally uncomfortable for him. I know that everyone is different, but I if any of you have any suggestions on how to approach him, or advice on whether I should even consider it, I'd greatly appreciate it! THANKS!

I would just like to thank you for comeing to Syring Elm. I think that you taught us alot about bullying. When people have their own stories to tell kids, I think that really puts an impact on kids from stories that are true, that actually happen to unfortunate people such as yourself...so, I thank you!

However much your speech affected people of my school (Durand Middle) nothing had changed. Only the people who have never been bullied and are not bullies have changed. There have been numerous fights and lies. Rumors and false facts plague the school. Lies and secrets dominate the lives of many kids.
With all of these and my previous signings on here I ask for a reply on what I should do. My friend's brother(He went to a different school) Commited suicide from bullying. Matt was telling the school about bullies and they never did anything about it. Eventually he killed himself.

Hi Gabe, my little 18 year old sister-in-law was diagnosed with FA when she was around 7-10 years old. It's been a difficult journey for her. She was taken out of school in third grade and started home schooling due to bullying and name calling. She is the most intelligent, funny and quick-witted person I know and needless to say she is beautiful inside and out.. I wanted to ask a question... I know on her mind, she is worried about future relationships ,and if there are any jobs which she could pursue as a career. Would you mind letting me know your thoughts on these matters? Her family, or my in-laws, aren't quick to discuss FA and certainly will not discuss her future other than day-to-day things.

Thanks, Kelly

Not to mention one boy who punches my shoulder repeatedly if I make a small, meaningless comment, my brother died when he was four from a disease called MD, my mother used to have cancer, my parents divored and my cousin died a week or two before you came to our small school in Durand.
You have given me something to think about and I hope you keep on touching the lives of others.

i sent your fundraising info to my mom, and dad. Hopefully they will be able to help out more than I can. I will finally graduate from school in June. It's about time huh! I guess we all have our path to follow. I think it's great that your attacking the bullying subject. It's something we all have dealt with in some way shape or form but, some of us choose not to examine ourselves to see if we are the ones' bullying others.

Just wanted to say hello, and say YOU ROCK!

Don't forget if your coming to Chicago to drop me a line. So we can meet up again, and maybe do some other stuff besides sitting in a bar.

Gabe & Izzy:

Thank you so much for what you have done for me. I saw your story on Animal Planet in January of 2003. I was facing laying in bed with my abdomen open because of a hernia surgery gone bad for 6 months and seeing your story really gave me inspiration to get thru that time and all of my subsequent surgeries. Seeing you and Izzy go thru the same thing was very touching. It has been gratifying to get to know you and your mom. It is unbelievable how far you have come over the past three years. Going out and speaking in front of people, helping others and really making a difference in people's lives is just a great thing. I am sure you have tough days but the fact that you have made a positive out of a negative is a testament to your strength. Your mom is also an unbelievable person who truly is what a parent should be. Her support of you has been tremendous and my mom and now wife have helped me thru some difficult times. I have another surgery coming up but I am going to meet you and your mom one of these days. Thank you for all that you have done for me and continue to do. Hi to Izzy!!

I was one of the 7th grade students at Durand Middle School. I was so overwelmed with your story I had to write you. I have been bullied almost all of this year and last because of my weight. I am quite a bit over weight and people seem to think its funny. But I got so choked up when you were telling your story to our school. You are so beautiful inside and out I dont see how someone could say such mean things to you. Ilove you so much. Please write.

Also I would like to thank you for traveling around the U.S. to help other schools, many people are looking up to you! Thanks Again.

I'm in 7th grade and I helped you when people were asking questions.
Wow your speach was so touching. I cried a lot . I'll never forget any of the things you said today. Whever you cried I cried. I loved the song that was played for that little slide show. That has to be the saddest song ever. Well I must go now. I would like it very much if you would message me back.

Gabe - Once again, a truly inspiring performance for our students and teachers. You tell your story so well. Our students understand the pain you went through, but they also see you fighting back - AND WINNING! After your assembly, students talked about you for days. We had MIX -IT-UP Day at Lunch after your assembly, and students sat with people they don't normally sit with. As difficult as this was, I kept referring to your message - Meet someone new today! I really believe your words helped them meet new people and possibly new friends.
Thanks for all you do!
